Thursday - Port Orford - Brookings

We started our day with words from Psalms 18 - "The Lord is my rock and my fortress...in whom shall I put my trust" - travelling down the Oregon coast we see so many huge "rocks" and today we were reminded to reflect on these verses and take comfort in them trusting God for everything we need.

Today is also our last full day of cycling in Oregon and we took oh so many pictures that I will post....we even saw some wind surfers screaming across the waves...

At one of the first viewpoints we stopped, we met a cyclist who had a prosthetic leg attached to the front of his bike - very noticeable since it was sticking straight out...looking closer we noticed he was cycling with another prosthesis. Chris told us he had lost his leg 7 years ago in a car accident when he was in his senior year of high school. He had flown in from New Jersey last Thursday and was doing basically the same route we were. He had met up with 3 other cyclists and the four of them were travelling fully loaded (our guys picked up their bikes and they weighed over 100 lbs.)so they were working hard but were half our age. Chris takes the opportunity whenever he can to encourage accident victims to prove to them that he is able to do most everything that others can. We let him know that we thought he was a real inspiration, even to us. He jokingly told us that he never gets cold toes or sore calves when cycling...

Just before Orphir we left Hwy 101 for a scenic road that would take us to Gold Beach where we were to have coffee. Joe said he was cycling down the road and there were two deer running along the road with him. We have seen many deer but are waiting for elk which have eluded us so far. The hunters do tell us there are elk because they hunt them...

Coffee was at the Rollin' In Dough Bakery & Bistro. Delicious home baked goodies with coffee to give some extra energy to the cyclists before they had a long steep climb to get to the lunch stop. Checking out the "toilette" we noticed a signature on the wall - "Claude Monet 1907". I asked if he had come personally to decorate the bistro and she assured me he had. From the bistro we could smell something "smokin" and our noses led us to a stand selling smoked albacore. We purchased a pound of it plus some home made roasted garlic bread and a french loaf plus some green and red grapes and we had a feast at the Arch Rock Point Picnic Area which was our scheduled lunch stop. We put the food out and the cyclists/vultures pounced on that food and it was gone. A good choice for a treat before the regular fare that we put out at lunch stops.

The one photo with the 3 poles on it shows green shoots coming out of the top of the pieces of wood...

The beautiful scenery just kept coming - we did say that pictures can never capture what we see with the naked eye....

We arrived at Pacific Sunset Motel to closed doors and had to wait until the manager came...could be interesting tomorrow morning when we hit the California border to see if we have any fruits or vegetables that we can't take across. We are only 6 kilometers from the border.
