The elusive elk have finally been spotted...it's hard to get them on a photo since they blend in so well with the landscape.
Once again we invaded a "small town diner" and the lone waitress earned her keep with the 14 of us all in need of breakfast. A volunteer from our group helped get everything on the tables so we could all eat at the same time. They were down to one cook as well as their second cook was in hospital in labour with having a baby who decided to come three weeks early or so the story went.
From here the cyclists would be taking the Newton Drury Parkway which would go right through the Redwoods..
We were out of the Redwoods as quickly as we came into them. Bernie organized the route so the cyclists would be taking scenic routes or bike paths today. We did see lots of ocean scenery once again. We all still say that the naked eye does see more than anyone can capture on camera.
Too bad we could not capture on a photo the 50+ sea lions we could see via binoculars but not with the naked eye. We could hear them barking before we even got to the spot where they were.
Tail gate lunch was scheduled at the outskirts of Arcata - it turned out to be a very complicated meeting spot because of a festival in the middle of town. We have a photo of how the cyclists were welcomed into town - being on bikes, they could go where the vehicles could not....cycling shoes are not conducive to dancing so could not join in with the dancers.
The cyclists who were with Joe assured me they would not have left Joe in Arcata....
Just before getting to Arcata, only the cyclists saw the following..
Black berries are in full season and whenever we stop, we pick and eat. At coffee time this morning, home made BlackBerry Pie was on the menu and a few pieces were ordered with lots of forks so everyone can have a taste.
Saturday's ride was 146 kilometers long - one cyclist wanted to do a "century ride" and he clocked in at 160 kilometers by taking an alternate route - we had a beautiful sunny day and the cyclists arrived in great form in Ferndale just before 5:00 p.m. - tired and hungry. We had rooms at the Redwood Suites - great accommodations for the weekend. Ferndale is known as a Victorian Town - a step back in time. No more flats the whole day...
Some other photos taken on Saturday
